Writing Tutor/Mentor

The Howard Area Clubhouse

Do you love working with youth and want to give back to the community?

Our after-school educational program, The Howard Area Clubhouse, located in Rogers Park, is seeking talented, experienced Tutors in reading and writing for students between grades 4 and 12. We help both struggling and gifted youth reach their full potential by supplementing the instruction they receive in class and guiding them toward study practices and aides that can help them excel. As a tutor, you will become an official Mentor of the Clubhouse with access to some of our resources while we can assist you in resume and career-building for your future!

Job Requirements:

  • Communicating effectively with youth of different backgrounds

  • Encouraging and aiding learning for success

  • Understanding a variety learning styles for our variety of youth

  • Knowledge of the expectations for academic writing

  • Ability to quickly assess a document’s writing strengths and weaknesses

  • Basic understanding of English grammar, rhetoric, and the writing process

  • An “A” or “B+” in English 101 or equivalent

  • Completed application (including one academic or employment reference)

  • Overall GPA of 3.2 or above, either currently or in previous education

  • For current students – instructor approval (signature and course number) is required.

  • For non-students – departmental approval (signature and course number) is required. Please present your transcript to the appropriate departmental office so they can make the correct recommendation.

Skills & Qualifications: 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Commitment to tutor for a minimum of three months or an entire season
  • Willingness to work at least once to twice a week during the week (Not available on weekends)
  • Familiarity with MLA- and/or APA-style writing, research, and documentation

Core Competencies:

  • Be patient and maintain calm with stressed, nervous, and confused students.
  • Work with students to break large tasks into manageable parts and prioritize learning.
  • Reinforce learning goals by focusing on one or two concepts in-depth.
  • Communicate with people from diverse cultures, ages, writing levels, and learning styles.
  • Work independently and as a team to tutor students and increase your own knowledge of writing.

Typical Duties:

  • Individually tutor 1-3 students per hour in grammar, organization, and clarity of English writing.
  • Address students’ writing needs while acknowledging students’ concerns and goals.
  • Explain the same writing concept in many different ways depending on the student’s writing level and comprehension.
  • With guidance from a Lab Instructor, work to increase knowledge of English grammar and rhetoric as well as tutoring techniques.
  • Log all tutoring sessions accurately on a Google Doc that will be shared with the Mentor Coordinator.
  • Attend monthly Mentor trainings (dates and times vary, but will not be on a weekend)

Essential Functions:

  • Attend all tutor training sessions.
  • Computer literacy: use a computer for word processing, internet searching, and emailing.
  • Protect student confidentiality.
