LATITUDE Chicago | Executive Director

LATITUDE is the Midwest's first and only community digital lab, with a special focus on photography, located in Chicago’s West Town neighbourhood, and founded in 2012. The organization’s mission is twofold: first, to provide affordable access to high-end digital printing and scanning equipment and a production space for the creation of artwork, while offering technical assistance and education; and second, to organize a diverse range of social, academic, and educational programming dedicated to the arts, including a fee-free monthly Artist-in-Residence program. The organization aims to act as a hub for Chicago artists, and provide resources usually unavailable outside academic institutions.

 

LATITUDE seeks an enthusiastic and hardworking professional to take on the role of Executive Director, reporting to and collaborating with the board of directors. The position is in charge of overseeing the organization’s daily operations and ensuring the continuous fulfillment of its mission and financial health while playing an active role in shaping its future growth.

 

Executive Director Responsibilities

Staff Management

  • Supervise staff of two full-time and two part-time employees, 2-3 Fellows, and over 15 volunteers, setting clear goals and directives and mentoring their professional development

  • Assist Lab Director with

    • Volunteer hiring and management

    • Managing communications and billing as needed for large-scale service bureau productions (E.G. museums, galleries, institutions, VIP clients)

  • Mentor and manage LATITUDE Fellows

  • Recruit and hire all non-volunteer staff members

  • Develop HR policies and benefit structures with the guidance of the board of directors

 

Financial

  • Work closely with the accountant to

    • Maintain monthly bookkeeping

    • Create the annual budget

    • Refine accounting and other organizational structures to prepare for future growth

  • Track income and expenses against budgetary goals

 

Development

  • Pursue individual, corporate, and in-kind donors

  • Compose Grant applications and final reports

  • Plan and execute LATITUDE’s annual fundraiser

    • Develop new fundraising initiatives

 

General Program

  • Oversee LATITUDE’s Residency and programming

    • Work with the programming fellow to plan & execute all events

  • Oversee LATITUDE’s Education program

    • Work with the Education Fellow to plan & execute all courses

    • Interview & select OpenEd Programs during the fall Open Call

  • Oversee all communications and marketing

    • Work with the Communications Coordinator to strategically plan all communications

    • Request design work and provide feedback on all work created for the organization

 

Community

  • Develop and maintain community connections

  • Work with Community Outreach Fellow to define the new position and goals

  • Represent LATITUDE through class visits, site visits (labs, vendors, arts organizations), panel discussions and other events

 

Administrative

  • Develop organizational structure and strategy to encourage organizational growth, stability, and community benefit

  • Support Board communications and development and provide regular updates

 

Culture

  • Work to continually support and improve LATITUDE’s culture of openness, shared knowledge and resources, and generosity

  • Complete all responsibilities with a focus on fostering an inclusive, diverse and philanthropic organization

 

Working Environment

  • Open workspace within high-energy public lab

  • Typically 9am – 5pm Monday-Friday schedule with occasional nights and weekends

  • Remote work is acceptable when necessary

  • Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include unlimited access to all LATITUDE equipment.

Requirements
Skills & Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • 3-4 years of experience working in an arts and culture setting

  • Proven commitment to visual arts and Chicago artists

  • Strong managerial experience and interpersonal skills

  • Education experience and interest in a mentorship role

  • Strong writing skills for both internal and external audiences through grant, proposal, or press release writing

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and calmly problem solve

  • Experience creating and maintaining budgets

  • Familiarity with and appreciation for photography (required) with hands-on experience with inkjet printing and film photography (beneficial)

  • Public programming experience preferred

  • Proven experience in fundraising via individual donors, grant writing, corporate donors, and/or fundraising events

  • Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative team culture and learning new skills
