About American Blues Theater:
Winner of American Theatre Wing’s prestigious 2016 National Theatre Company Award, American Blues Theater is a premier arts organization with an intimate environment that patrons, artists, and all Chicagoans call home. American Blues Theater explores the American identity through the plays it produces and communities it serves. American Blues Theater follows three guiding values both on and off its stages – to be accessible, responsible, and true. Our diverse and multi-generational artists constitute our 33-member Ensemble and have nearly 600 combined years of collaboration on stage. Our theater and artists have received over 197 Joseph Jefferson Awards and nominations that celebrate excellence in Chicago theater and 35 Black Theater Alliance Awards. Our artists are honored with Pulitzer Prize nominations, Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Emmy Awards, and numerous other accolades.
American Blues Theater seeks a college student, recent graduate, or young professional to serve as Administrative Intern. American Blues Theater aims to give the Administrative Intern comprehensive experience in theater management to build the skills necessary to be a competitive candidate in the field. The internship will provide an in-depth look into the operations of a mid-sized, professional theater company and will provide the opportunity to work directly with the Artistic Director, Managing Director, General Manager, Director of Development, and Director of Patron Services.
The Administrative Intern will acquire hands-on experience in contracts; union relations; budgeting and reporting; board relations; senior staff organization; and planning. Intern will work closely with the Managing Director. Time will also be spent becoming familiar with the functions and practices of the development, marketing, box office, and production departments insofar as they relate to budgeting, planning, and reporting. Candidates must have strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, excellent writing skills, the ability to multitask, and the ability to work within a team environment as well as taking on independent projects.
Internship is flexible; American Blues Theater will work closely with the intern when setting weekly schedules. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. A stipend is available commensurate with experience and weekly availability. The Administrative Intern will also receive complimentary tickets to American Blues Theater productions. Housing is not provided.
American Blues Theater is an equal opportunity employer.
